Finally

I've been working on one of our guest rooms for a while. I knew that I wanted to go clean and simple - that's the style that we feel the most comfortable in.

My parents had an extra bed and headboard last year, which they kindly gave us last year...and gave me a jump start for decorating. The headboard was gold, so I spray painted it black. I knew that I didn't want to spend too much money to finish off the rest. I found the chest & side table in different antique stores, and printed pictures we already had from a trip for the collage over the bed. I picked out the fabric from Outrageous Bargains, and had pillows and the side table cover made by a seamstress. The side decorations all came from the outlets. I think each item was about $10. The lamps were only $30 on closeout from Target, a total steal. Finally ..the room is done...now it's ready for our Thanksgiving guests!

**The paint color is Stone by Restoration Hardware.

I love the way the paint on the chest looks in this picture.

This is a guest water bottle and glass (on the top). It's a great idea to have ice water waiting for guests after they've traveled all day.

One last thing...this is my trick with old furniture. Drawer liners and soap. You can make any old chest smell great after a couple of weeks.

True Beauty

I drove up to Canton this morning to pick up some pillows and table cover that I had made for our guest room. I wish I would have brought our camera, please excuse these pictures from my camera phone. It is so beautiful out in the country.

This is an old Barn at the end of someone's driveway. It was so pretty, I stopped short in the middle of the road to take a picture of it. They had it so nicely decorated for fall.

A closer look:

These horses came right up to the fence after I snapped this photo. I thought the dogs would be afraid, but they were so excited to say hello to them.

New Camera

We're pretty jazzed that we got a new camera. It is a Canon. As much as we like to take pictures, learning how to use it is going to be so much fun!

Here's one of the first shots I took with the camera.

And here's another....this is a Hydrangea in our backyard.

Here are a couple more pictures I took when the sun came up the next day. She's a sweet girl, she sat perfectly still while I adjusted the focus.

Home Cookin'

I made Spiked Apple Crisp for a Junior League event - it's a recipe out of our cookbook. Apple treats happen to be my favorite. Thought I'd share in case you're interested...the only suggestion I'd make is reduce the Grand Marnier and Amaretto. It was a little strong for the dessert.

Spiked Apple Crisp

5 cups apples, peeled and diced
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
1 teaspoon grated orange peel
1-ounce Grand Marnier
1-ounce Amaretto
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup light brown sugar
3/4 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter, softened
Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Arrange apples in a greased 2-quart casserole. Sprinkle cinnamon, lemon and orange peels, Grand Marnier and Amaretto on top of apples. Combine sugars, flour, salt and butter until crumbly. Spread this mixture over apples. Bake 1 hour or until apples are tender and top is brown. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Yields: 8 servings

Cutting up the apples...

I found it easier to prepare the ingredients and get them ready to combine all at once. Then it was simple as dumping the bowls into the casserole.

First add the spice combination on top of the apples....

...Then the flour mixture.

Bake, and whoilla! A wonderful smelling house and dessert. (This is three batches below.)

Oak Ridge-ers

For the second weekend in a row, Jay and I came up to Oak Ridge, near Knoxville. The first weekend, my dad bought tickets for the two of them for TN/Auburn game. This weekend we got tickets for the TN/GA game. It's been a great couple of weekends!

Last night we went to a new-ish restaurant at the end of my parents street, called the Flatwater Grill. It overlooks the river that travels over 30 miles through east Tennessee.
